Susan McConnell passed away on Wednesday, March 20, after a hard-fought battle with ovarian cancer.
Susan served on the UVA Cancer Center Advisory Board for a decade before finishing her term as vice-chair in June 2018. Susan often opened her home and heart for any event that would help us raise support for the Cancer Center. Just a week before her passing, she stepped up to serve on the host committee for yet another Cancer Center benefit at the request of a friend.
Susan was a tireless and dedicated cancer center volunteer. Arriving before the sun each week to get the coffee started and provide nourishment and comfort to patients and families in our infusion center. She, along with Rosemary, launched the first Cancer Center Staff Appreciation luncheon 4 years ago and it’s become a wonderful annual tradition.
Susan also supported the building of UVA Cancer Center’s Couric Building. Never one for a fuss, she and her brother Jamie elected to name a space in the radiation oncology suite on the basement level instead of a more visible space, preferring not to stand out from other volunteers as she served refreshments.
Pam Sutton-Wallace captured her perfectly when she described Susan as “such a faithful steward of UVA. ”
